Georg Cantor, a revolutionary mathematician

Georg Cantor was a famous German mathematician who lived during the XIX and the early XXth century. In his early age, he was talented in the music sector thanks to his musician’s family. We could think he would have become a musician but no ! He became a mathematician ! He did successful studies in University of Berlin where he specialized in physics, philosophy, and mathematics.

Cantor brought a lot of revolutionary concepts in mathematics even if, at this period, he was criticated by others mathematicians who thought that his work was strange and abstract.

In fact, Cantor’s method of proof of this theorem implies the existence of an « infinity of infinities ». In his 1st publication, Cantor explained that the set of Real numbers include more numbers that the set of integers, so there are different sizes of intinity sets.

At the end of the XIXth century, Cantor developped the « cantor’s theorem », wich is a theory of infinity set, called cardinal or ordinal numbers. He defined the notation of cardinal numbers with a Hebrew letter : א and ordinal numbers with Greek letter ω.

He died in 1918.
