National Gallery Of Scottland

The Scottish National Gallery is the national art galleryof Scotland. It is located on the Mound in central Edinbourgh, in a neoclassical building designed by William Henry Playfour, and first opened to the public in 1859. The gallery houses the Scottish national collection of fine art, including Scottish and international art from the beginning of the Renaissance up to the start of the 20th century.

It is made up of three interconnected buildings, right in the heart of Edinburgh. The Gallery is home to a major part of Scotland’s sensational national collection of fine art; the Academy is one of Europe’s premier venues for international exhibitions.

The history of the building:

The Royal Institution building was the first name of the National Gallery of Edinburgh, it opened on the mound in 1828, when they began to acquire paintings. In the 1840's, they build a new building to receive The Royal Scottish Academy. The eastern part of the building was galleries of Royal Scottish Academy and the western part was reserved for the new National Gallery After that, in the early 21th Century, the royal academy have build an underground between buildings, known as The Gardens Entrances, which provides a new access to Princes Street Gardens.

In the building we visited, on the first floor there are modern arts, and in the second floor the ancient art.
